Emirates recently marked a significant milestone in sustainable aviation by launching its first flights powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Dubai International Airport (DXB). On October 24th, flight EK 412, headed for Sydney, was one of the pioneering flights to utilize SAF.
Shell played a crucial role in this endeavor, providing 315,000 gallons of blended SAF for use at Emirates' hub in Dubai. This marked the first-ever supply of SAF to Emirates in Dubai, enabling the airline to operate several flights in recent weeks.
The blended SAF consisted of a mixture of 40% neat SAF and 60% conventional Jet A-1 fuel. Importantly, this blend possesses chemical characteristics identical to traditional jet fuel, allowing it to be seamlessly integrated into the existing airport fuel infrastructure and used in the entire Emirates fleet without any modifications.
In its pure form, SAF can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over its life cycle compared to conventional jet fuel. To track the delivery, usage, and environmental benefits of SAF, Emirates has been utilizing Avelia, Shell Aviation's blockchain-powered book and claim solution.
Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, expressed the airline's commitment to sustainable flying, emphasizing their ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and help customers minimize their carbon footprint. While acknowledging the long road ahead, he hoped that their partnership with Shell Aviation would inspire more producers to make SAF readily available at major hubs like Dubai and across their network.
Jan Toschka, President of Shell Aviation, highlighted the collaborative history between Emirates and Shell and their shared commitment to enabling SAF usage in the UAE. He believed that this milestone would encourage further SAF adoption in the aviation industry, not only in the UAE but also in the wider region.
In a separate development earlier in the year, Emirates and Shell signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore collaboration in sustainable travel and technology-driven travel experiences. They are actively working on mechanisms to reduce travel emissions for Shell's business travel requirements and utilizing the Avelia platform for transparent tracking of SAF's environmental benefits. They are also looking into enhancing the travel experience through personalized products using technologies such as New Distribution Capabilities (NDC).
Emirates' sustainability efforts are rooted in three key areas: reducing emissions, responsible consumption, and wildlife and habitat preservation. They have established a $200 million fund for research and development projects focused on reducing the impact of fossil fuels in commercial aviation, one of the most significant commitments in the industry.
Emirates has a history of championing SAF use and actively contributing to research on its higher blends, safety, and reliability. While they have been using SAF since 2017, they are dedicated to scaling up the production and supply of sustainable aviation fuel.
This information showcases Emirates' commitment to sustainable aviation and their pioneering efforts in incorporating SAF into their operations.
