Australia booked their place in the semi-finals of the ICC World Cup 2023 by beating Afghanistan in dramatic fashion thanks to Glenn Maxwell's extraordinary double century in a thriller.  Facing a target of 292, Australia's top and middle order crumbled.  Reached 7/91 by the 19th over thanks to Afghanistan's bowlers.

However, Glenn Maxwell, who came in at number six, played a brilliant innings which helped the fortunes of the Afghanistan fielders a little as they missed the chance.  He combined with captain Pat Cummins, who contributed a responsible 12 runs, to seal an incredible win with 19 balls to spare.  Maxwell's brilliant effort included 21 fours and 10 sixes, eventually reaching an unbeaten 201 off just 128 balls.

Maxwell's innings set several records in the cricket history books:

1.

It was the first double century by an Australian batsman in ODI cricket, surpassing the previous record of 185 runs by Shane Watson against Bangladesh in 2011.

2.

Maxwell became the first cricketer to score a double century while chasing a run in ODIs.

3.

His innings is also the highest individual score by an Australian batsman in the ODI World Cup.

 4.

Maxwell became the first non-opener to score a double century in ODIs.

 5.

He scored the fastest ODI double century in 128 balls during an ODI World Cup match.

 6.

His innings also recorded the highest individual score by a batsman ranked No. 5 or below.

 7.

Glenn Maxwell and Pat Cummins' 202-run partnership became Australia's highest partnership for the 8th wicket in ODIs, breaking the previous record of 138 by South Africa's Andrew Hall and Justin Kemp.

 8.

The total of 584 runs in the match became the highest in ODI matches between Australia and Afghanistan.
